Accountants for Skin Care & Beauty

Treatments, retail product, room rental and equipment on finance — four revenue and cost patterns in one small business.

What do beauty and skin clinics need to track separately?

Service revenue and retail product revenue, because their margins and stock requirements are completely different, and retail is often where the profit hides. Then room or chair rental arrangements (which raise contractor-versus-employee and GST questions), equipment finance on lasers and machines, and prepaid packages and gift vouchers — money received before the service is delivered, which is a liability rather than income until redeemed.

  • Fixed monthly packages from $220
  • BAS, payroll and year-end handled together

What we watch

What matters most for beauty and skin clinics.

Prepaid packages are liabilities

Course and package sales received upfront aren't earned yet. Treating them as income overstates profit and creates a tax bill on money you may still owe in service.

Room rental arrangements

Whether a renting therapist is a contractor, tenant or employee affects super, payroll tax and GST. Document it deliberately.

Equipment finance

Lasers and devices are large capital items — the finance type changes GST timing and deduction profile.

Retail margin separately

Product margin tracked apart from service margin, with stock counted at year end.

Deductions

FAQ

Skin Care & Beauty — questions we're asked most.

How do I account for prepaid treatment packages?

As unearned revenue — a liability — recognised as income as treatments are delivered. Cash received still affects GST at the time of supply depending on your accounting basis, so package sales need both an accounting and a GST treatment. Clinics that book the whole package as income in month one routinely overpay tax and misread their profitability.

Is a therapist renting a room my employee?

Not necessarily, but the label doesn't decide it. If you control hours, pricing, supply product and take the client relationship, it looks like employment regardless of the rental agreement — with super and payroll tax consequences. A genuine rental has independent pricing, own clients and own products.

Can I claim training and courses?

Yes, where they relate to your current business activity — advanced technique training, device certification, refreshers. Training to enter a new field generally isn't deductible until you're operating in it.

Are beauty and skin treatments GST-taxable?

Registration is compulsory at $75,000 turnover. Most treatments are taxable supplies (some medical services can be GST-free, which is a distinction worth checking if you have a doctor or nurse involved), and registration lets you claim GST on stock and equipment.
